Of the NZ Food Innovation Showcase 2011
Today I visited the NZ Food Innovation Showcase, held at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The registration process was easy. Much better than many of the events I’ve attended. And then, through the white archway...
The first section was all about Tertiary schools working in the Food Science area. There are some really innovative programmes. It’s fantastic to see students not only exploring the science but also the business and marketing aspects to getting products to market. Loved the ‘Nothing Else’ brand that AUT has been developing.Several equipment manufacturers were represented. I’m not entirely sure what these machines do but I know I want one. (OK - it’s a bottler, but knowing isn’t as interesting as not).
There are some really innovative businesses in the market. I had a nice chat with the guy from Friendlypak. They create formed trays made from potato starch that are biodegradable but have freezer and shelf-life. They also have some nice composting bins. I’m not sure if I have room for one. Tempting. May suggest to Urban Pantry...!It was cool to see several of our clients promoting their products. Always good to have a catchup with them.I think the most interesting display was that of Flyhidrate. Juices specially formulated for aiding in long-haul flight hydration. They had an aircraft cabin, seats, and greeters dressed as cabin crew. They caught my attention anyway. The product also was drinkable. Always helpful.
Probably the best conversation was with the man behind Venerdi Gluten-Free breads. Interesting ideas on where we’re going wrong with our food production. We look after cows, but aren’t so great at looking after the people-herd. I think he’s probably correct. It’s also been nice to see his business evolve and grow over the last four years. I like his new packaging (not created by us, sadly).
Anyway, A fun couple of hours had. I did get a strong sense of optimism. And it is encouraging to see product development occurring, even in this recession of ours.- S
