Of Things That Grow

Like every Hobbit, I do have a love of things that grow.

Well, thinking about it honestly, it is more a love of things that grow by themselves with minimal support or interference by myself, than things that require a degree of nurturing. In my past life, I actually constructed a raised vegetable patch which looked amazing. I dutifully planted seeds and seedlings and was quite proud of myself. Right up until I saw that my cat (who I wasn’t particularly fond of anyway) had decided to make my garden his own private bathroom and dug up all my nice rows and mixed them up. My pristine garden lasted only two days before he killed it. Cats. Typical. Clearly I am still a little bitter.Fast forward, moving on.I now live in an apartment and have been looking for a solution that would work for me. I’m enjoying cooking these days so to have fresh salad greens and herbs close to hand would be fantastic.Previous attempts involving herb pots haven’t been that successful. Things start off really well and then have a tendency to die.I have now discovered Greensmart Pots. These things are amazing. I’ve bought my first one for a trial and it is likely I’ll buy a couple more. I got superb service from Pauline.So... here we are on Day One. I was handily assisted by Miss 5 in the planting. The very next day...And yes there are green things poking up.I am quite excited by the speed that things grow and love getting out there on the balcony to look for the daily improvements. It is also very nice sitting with a wine in hand looking at green things. After ten days we’re here:I am thinking that Miss 5 will be most pleased with the progress.Now. There is a slight problem. I have no idea what exactly is growing. I have a vague recollection of Rocket, Beets and Basil - but I can’t actually remember what else. I must remember to invest in some named plastic pegs next time. In the meantime, I am experiencing the wonder of great expectations and not knowing what is about to occur. This could be where I end up...!!!So... what's next? Chickens? My neighbours may not fully understand or approve...- Simon
