Of Mens Health - Part One
As you’re aware I am, for the first time in my life, attempting to grow a Mo’ for Movember. The progress as at the 9th is here:
Not particularly impressive. But I’m surprising myself! The money raised as a result of the Movember campaign is channelled by our men’s health partners into a number of world class and innovative education, research and awareness initiatives. Movember New Zealand collaborates with two men’s health partners – the Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.I am not building sponsorship but will be donating. You can donate here. All this Movember promotion and talk got me thinking about myself and some of my habits and things I avoid.I cannot remember the last time I saw a doctor for anything more than a tetanus jab for being a failed constructor. Yes, I impaled myself on a nail... but that’s another story.I’ve certainly never had any checkup more serious than taking my weight or blood pressure.I’m now 41 (gah) and it is time I took my health seriously. Men usually don’t. We don’t ever go to doctors unless something is green and about to fall off, or there is a suspicious rash that won’t go away (note: I’ve not experienced either, just so you know!). I mentioned this in passing to a female friend and her comment was that its just irresponsible. So, I'm getting reponsible. So, in the interests of encouraging men everywhere to get regular with their doctors checkups, I’m going to have a checkup. Top to Toe. I’ve made an appointment. I’m quite nervous about it as I have no idea what to expect. I will be posting a follow-up after the event.Simon.
