Of the Lifewise Big Sleepout - 2012, Wrap up
It’s done.June 28th saw approximately 65 volunteers from business, politics, charity and education gather at the AUT quad for the Lifewise Big Sleepout.Over the last six weeks we’ve all been challenging the people we work with, our friends, our families and the many people in our extended networks to donate. The purpose? To raise awareness about the solvable issue of Homelessness in Auckland, and to raise funds to help Lifewise continue the incredibly effective work that they’re doing in this sector. Lifewise gets little funding from Government, and Government has no policy around Homelessness. The Homeless fall through the cracks of our society. Yes, you do see some as you walk around our city, but you don’t see those that live in their cars. Those that couch-surf - moving from friend to friend... until they run out of friends willing to help them.People lose their identities. They lose their sense of self. How easy would it be for me to be in their shoes?Consider the Christchurch earthquake. You lose your home. You lose your job due to the business being destroyed. The pressure of holding your family together gets to you - and you turn to alcohol or other drugs to deaden the pain and desperation you feel. Soon, your ability to make rational decisions is affected. You lose your family. You are unable to get out of your room - until you’re kicked out due to non-payment of rent. And you don’t know where to turn, who to ask for for help. That is, if you are able to ask for help.Homelessness is non-discriminating. It can happen to anyone. This cause has found me.At the time of writing, we have raised more than $120,000. It’s a good result - but more is needed. You’ll be able to continue to make donations until mid-August.To those of you who have supported me in this, I thank you. You have made a difference in the lives of many who have been impacted by circumstance. Here are a few pics of the night:
