Of Nuns

Nuns are an interesting group of our society. They seem to be equally respected and feared. Many people have felt the cold, judging gaze of a Nun after they’ve done something a little foolish, and even now reflecting on encounters with Nuns can put a wee chill in the spine.Nuns are women who have taken solemn spiritual vows for any number of reasons, and as such there is an allure with the idea of Nuns and what they’re all about. It is not a natural position to live a life of Self-Denial.One of the more high profile Nuns was ‘The Penguin’ from the Blues Brothers. The stern female authoritarian who can terrorise even the most resilient man has a degree of appeal. And of course great comic value. With all the different ‘Hollywood’ Nun characters we’ve come to know (and the Porn Industry’s exploration of Nun characters as well...), we can often miss the sheer goodness of Nuns. Many do work hard with people less fortunate. A prime example is that of Mother Theresa and her work in Calcutta, and as such, they should be respected members of our community.However.It is understood that we are not allowed to get angry with Nuns. Because there is a very good chance of a lightning strike. Isn’t there?I have a Nun story.I was happily shopping in a supermarket (one of my favourite things to do, as you well know) and I notice a pair of Nuns also shopping, walking towards me, in my aisle. They saw me, and politely said “excuse me Sir, could you please reach....” , then a pause, a reflection and consideration of my height, and.. “oh never mind.”Damnit. I am not that short. I can totally reach the top shelf in a Supermarket. At least... 80%.. of the time.Completely killed my shopping buzz. And I suppressed. Because Nun-Rage is bad. Right? Sigh.So...  have you got any Nun stories??- Simon
