Of Art
I have been fortunate enough to visit a number of cities around the world, and one of the things I make time for is to explore the museums and galleries - both high profile, famous sites as well as off-street alternative rooms.I am moved by art.I love to be able to take time out and absorb a painting, a sculpture. To marvel at colours and techniques. To recognise the skill of the craftsman.Probably my favourite artist is Monet. I was so excited to be able to see a collection of his works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City the last time I was there.
This museum also has an amazing collection of unknown or forthcoming artists.Van Gogh is another of my favourites.
Recently I have been paying more attention to Street Art. Who hasn’t I guess? I am impressed with the work of Banksy. Having seen ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ I am of the opinion that that was a performance art piece poking fun at those who have created a monetary value for his (and others work). That being said, it’s pretty good.
I also love the work of Edgar Mueller.
I am also so glad that I work in a modern art environment. I’m surrounded by exceptionally talented designers and I really do draw inspiration from their work. One of my friends created these two pieces for me. They’re typographical representations of two quotes by Douglas Adams."He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it."
and"He attacked everything in life with a mix of extraordinary genius and naive incompetence, and it was often difficult to tell which was which."
These two have pride of place in my lounge. When I was in Paris, I passed through the Louvre too quickly. I’m absolutely going to return and give myself more time. It's a remarkable place.
I’ll be in the UK later this year, so a return to the British Museum is planned.I adored Rome when I was there. I remember getting to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel after having been there for a week. By that time, I was so overwhelmed at the sheer history of the place that the Sistine Chapel was somewhat muted. Another must return.
I loved the exploring the various Smithsonian sites in Washington, D.C. also. Now that I know a Decepticon dwells there my perspective has changed utterly.I have decided that I am going to embark on a gallery discovery here in Auckland. I recently saw an exhibition by Polly Walker at Rebel Yell in K’Rd. I quite liked her work and am planning to purchase one of her pieces.Another emerging artist I’m impressed with is James Watkins. His ‘Red Roof’ works are compelling to me. I would love to own one of his piece.
You can find him (and others!) at The International Art Centre in Parnell.I’ve heard it said that without art or music a culture cannot exist. I wonder how our artists can be encouraged and supported. I’d love to see a return to the idea of arts patronage. There are so many artists for me to discover. I love photography, sculpture, mixed media. The use of technology to make a point.So.Any recommendations? who have you discovered? Who inspires you? How about gallery recommendations? Places for me to explore?- Simon
