Of a Daddy and Daughter Day
The most important thing in my world is that I maintain a connection with my two kids. I make a huge effort to ensure that my life choices don't impact them too much. To this end I’ve taken some personal days from work to be with them now that the holidays are upon us.Yesterday was the day I spent with my Miss 5.Here’s what we did.I picked her up and we went to a local shopping mall. We couldn’t get past the mall Santa without her having a chat. Now she is adamant that “Santa isn’t real” - her brother told her this of course. She thinks that “It’s just a fat guy that dresses up”. However, I do note that she is hedging her bets a little. Hence the four phone calls made to Santa at the Telecom Tree earlier this month and that insistence to address mall Santa.
We then sat down over a hot chocolate and made plans for what she wanted to do the rest of the day. She didn’t have a lot of vision but was excited about the possibilities. It took a while to have the discussion as there was a very climbable decoration a few metres away which demanded her attention every few minutes or so.
We explored the local toy store to consider a few gift options. We spent a lot of time in the Barbie section where she explained everything to me. Barbie has become quite sophisticated these days. Reversible gowns and flashing lighted belts/tiaras/shoes. Amazing! And probably why we parents need to set up a Barbie Budget. Sigh.Finishing up at the mall we drove across town to Mission Bay. It’s one of her favorite beaches and has an amazing playground. A major bonus was that the weather was warm and sunny as well. Thanks Auckland!
Burger King was her lunching establishment of choice. Of course, it is less to do with the food and more with the toys available with the kid meals. I'm OK with that! From there we went to the Fairy Shop in Ponsonby Road. We spent a lot of time looking at fairies and unicorns and jewellery and boxes and lights and flowers and costumes. The staff there were excellent and helpful but weren’t wearing fairy wings. I was somewhat disappointed.
Next on to St. Lukes mall to do the fun and slightly brave (on my part!) thing on the list. Hellooooo ProfessioNail...! The service was outstanding, and I have to say that the look of joy on Miss 5’s face when she was getting her nails done and seeing that I was getting mine done at the same time was priceless and memorable. It was totally worthwhile.

All in all, it was a fantastic day. And something we will definitely do again. I really enjoyed my time with a seriously cool little lady.Next week will be Daddy and Son day. It will involve more testosterone-oriented pursuits! Now, it has occurred to me that I didn’t consider everything... um... How do you get this polish off? There is nothing in my MAN-ual to advise...! Help!Simon.
